Is Face ID really secure?

Your face is your password, but how safe is it from cybercriminals?

Face ID has become part of everyday life. From unlocking our phones to authorising payments and accessing sensitive apps, facial recognition offers a quick and convenient way to protect our personal information. But with cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, is Face ID as secure as we think?

How does Face ID work?

Unlike a traditional password or PIN, Face ID uses facial recognition technology to identify you. On devices such as the iPhone, this involves mapping facial features using specialised sensors and comparing them with the stored data. This information is typically encrypted and stored securely on the device, rather than being kept as an ordinary photograph.

It is a significant step forward from simple passwords, which can be guessed, reused or stolen through phishing attacks.

Can Face ID be fooled?

Although facial recognition offers strong security, it is not completely foolproof. Certain systems may be vulnerable to sophisticated spoofing attempts, such as carefully crafted masks or other methods designed to imitate a real face. The level of protection varies depending on the device and its technology.

There are also practical risks. Someone could potentially force you to unlock your device using your face, whereas a strong PIN or password may give you greater control in certain situations.

Face ID also cannot protect you from every threat. If a cybercriminal gains access to your account credentials, exploits a vulnerable application or tricks you into revealing sensitive information, facial recognition alone will not prevent the attack.

How can you stay protected?

The best approach is to treat Face ID as one layer of security, rather than your entire defence. Use a strong, unique passcode, keep your device and applications updated, enable multi-factor authentication where possible and remain alert to suspicious messages and login requests.

For businesses, this is particularly important when employees use biometric authentication to access company systems and sensitive data.

The verdict

Face ID is a valuable security tool, offering a balance of convenience and protection. However, no single security measure is perfect. Combining biometric authentication with strong passwords, regular updates and good cybersecurity habits is what makes the real difference.

Convenience is great, but security works best when it never relies on just one layer.
