Homoglyph Domains Explained

Concerned about Cyber Risks?

Security and how we protect our systems and data is paramount at CSCM, as is our commitment to constantly look for ways to shield and protect our customers from any potential cyber threats.

One of the ways we do this is by partnering with organisations such as The National Cyber Crime Unit to keep up to date with the latest threats and cyber alerts.

Therefore, we would like to bring to your attention Homoglyph Domains which explained are impersonated domains that are almost identical to a legitimate business domain.

An example of this would be the following domain, csccm.co.uk which at first glance looks extremely like CSCM’s. It could be that this is a legitimate coincidence however it is possible that this has been created with the criminal intention of using it to do one or more of the following:

  • Creating a spoof email address
  • Sending phishing emails that appear to be from a company you know
  • Sending emails to pose as an internal contact and request sensitive data

In general, if you receive any suspicious emails always err on the side of caution and check before handing over any information.
