The Difference between a Help desk and a Service desk – Explained

The world of IT support can often be confusing, with numerous acronyms and many terms used interchangeably.

Two things that can be confused are IT Service desks and IT Help desks, they may sound the same, however they a little different.

The main difference is that a help desk is there to provide fast resolution to day-to-day issues whereas a service desk has a more strategic remit.

Service desks cover the help desk features above however importantly they have additional capabilities in support of an organisation’s needs, strategies and goals.

Although a help desk is there to support users and resolve problems as they arise, its more of a reactive environment and deals with immediate needs, technical issues and any sudden incidents. Whereas a service desk encompasses all these elements, but its purpose is broader and much more proactive.
