What the Big Switch Off Delay Means for You

Understanding the change from analogue to digital landlines

You may have heard about the “big switch off” – the move away from traditional landline networks to new digital phone lines. Originally planned for the end of 2025, the deadline has now been pushed back to 31st January 2027, giving everyone more time to prepare.

For decades, the UK has relied on the old analogue phone system (PSTN and ISDN). These networks are outdated, harder to maintain, and more prone to faults. Telecom providers like BT, Virgin Media O2, Sky, and Vodafone are upgrading to digital landlines, which run over the internet. This means clearer calls, better reliability, and useful new features like call blocking and three-way calling.

The good news is you won’t lose your landline – it’s just changing how it works. In many cases, it may be as simple as plugging your phone into your broadband router instead of the wall socket. Providers will contact you directly with instructions when it’s your turn to switch, so you don’t need to take immediate action.

The delay gives both households and businesses extra breathing room to make the transition. For businesses especially, it’s a chance to:

  • Review existing phone systems and see what needs updating
  • Explore digital alternatives that fit long-term needs
  • Plan a smooth migration without rushing
  • Train staff on any new features or systems

The shift to digital is inevitable – analogue simply can’t keep up anymore. But with the extended deadline, you now have more time to prepare and make sure the change works in your favour.

If you’re unsure how the switch off might affect you, speak to your provider – or contact CSCM to explore how we can support a smooth move to digital.
